It’s the summer holidays, so hopefully this means lots of running around, having fun outside, picnics and BBQ’s!
So, this time I have done a slightly different post, so we can look at delicious food to eat on the BBQ that can still be healthy.
A lot of the traditional foods people BBQ are not very healthy as they tend to have lots of fat and salt in them. As always, these are nice for a treat, but if you want to eat BBQ’s more often (and who wouldn’t!), here are some simple ideas to make it healthy and actually more tasty (in my opinion!).
You can cook almost anything on a BBQ, so get your mum and dad involved and have some fun trying new things!
Everybody’s favourite on a BBQ is a burger, but they don’t have to just come with cheese-try making them yourselves, it’s really fun and you can create any flavours you like!
Here’s a few combo’s I really like!
- BEEF MINCE-GRATED COURGETTE- GRATED ONION- GRATED GARLIC-DRIED OREGANO
- MINCE PORK- GRATED ONION- GRATED APPLE- SAGE
- TURKEY MINCE- FRESH CORIANDER- GRATED RED ONION- HENDERSONS RELISH
- LAMB MINCE- DRIED CORIANDER- CUMIN- SMOKED PAPRIKA
- WHITE FISH-DILL-LEMON
The best way to mix burgers together is to squish everything together with your hands!!
Scoffee, do you like BBQ’s??
I LOVE BBQ’s!!!!
What do you call a group of men waiting for a haircut??
Why did the Skeleton go to the BBQ?
To get a SPARE RIB!!
Who wants to try my quiz?
Kebabs are great fun to eat and again the options are endless- why not design your own kebab and send it in to Scoffee!
Things to put on a kebab:
Good ones are courgettes/peppers/mushrooms/onion
Try adding cubes of bread and halloumi cheese
Yes, you can even have a kebab for pudding!!
Try pineapple, grapes and peaches. Once cooked drizzle with honey and serve with natural yoghurt dip.
Slice peppers/aubergines/courgettes/whole spring onions and toss in oil, salt and pepper. Griddle them on the BBQ and enjoy them with crumbles feta cheese, fresh thyme or oregano.
OR, you can chop the griddled vegetable and add to cous cous with mint, and chopped nuts (pistachios or almonds work well!).
Have you ever cooked cheese on the BBQ???
- Put a whole feta cheese in foil with lemon zest, thyme/oregano, oil, and a few chilli flakes, salt & pepper. Wrap it up into a parcel and bake for 15 minutes on the bbq or in the oven.
- Halloumi is also known as ‘squeaky cheese’, because it can make a little noise like a mouse when you eat it! It’s really tasty BBQ’d, then drizzled with honey and fresh thyme or oregano.
You can cook big bits of meat too-like whole fish, prawns, whole chicken, legs of lamb, just get searching on the internet for ideas!
My Favourite on the BBQ is corn on the cob- boil for 5-6 minutes in water and then grill.
Try wrapping sweet potatoes in foil and cooking a jacket potato to have on the side!
Do you remember those BBQ’d bananas from the banana blog, just put the whole banana in its skin on the grill, then split open, add dark chocolate, let it melt and enjoy!
BAKED PEACHES: Put halved, stoned peaches in foil with vanilla and honey, wrap into a parcel and bake on the BBQ until soft, this is really nice with natural yoghurt!
OR, try the FRUIT KEBABS we talked about earlier!
I think everyone should be full by now, so all we need is the sun- Happy barbequing!
